When to Travel

  • Best time: Zanzibar enjoys tropical beach weather year-round, though the long rains are March–May and short rains around November.


Entry & Visa Requirements

  • Visa-free travel: South African passport holders do not need a visa for tourism stays of up to 90 days in Zanzibar and the rest of Tanzania.

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date and have at least 2 blank pages for entry/exit stamps.

  • Other entry requirements:• Proof of return/onward ticket• Proof of accommodation• Evidence of funds for your stay

  • Mandatory travel insurance: Since 1 October 2024, all visitors (including South Africans) must purchase inbound travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) before travel and show proof on arrival — international travel insurance on its own is not accepted.

    • This insurance typically costs around $44 per person for up to 92 days and covers things like medical emergencies and repatriation.
